Registering a critical finding

Critical findings are findings which are not directly related to the initial observation but are critical to the wellbeing of the patient. Therefore they require action by the Radiologist by means of a phone call or a personal conversation to indicate the finding and discuss proper follow up. Several radiology groups are still discussing the content of what needs to be reported but we already provide an example of a minimal data set below.
If a critical finding is reported by using either one of the below options, a marker will be sent to the RIS or EPR to notify the system of the critical finding.
You can register a critical finding in three different ways.

1. Use a category with the “critical finding” marker checked in SpeechReport Administration. This category will be translated to a trigger in the outgoing HL7 message to alert the 3rd party integration. The additional report text will be part of the complete report.

2. Use a category with the “critical finding” marker checked and create an autotext including the category name at the top. This allows you to set up a predefined set of anchors to be filled in by the author after registering a critical finding.

3. Use a structured report template which includes the “critical finding” section. This section will trigger the outgoing HL7 message to alert the 3rd party integration. The additional report text will be part of the complete report.

Example 2: More elaborate critical finding auto text

Please read the “Integration manual for the SpeechReport Platform” for more information on how to create the categories and structured template section on reporting a “critical finding”.
